Making the Most of April Break: Ideas for Student Engagement
Dear NCS Families,
We wanted to share some suggestions for how your child can make the most of their time away from school as we enter April break. While school breaks are a great opportunity for relaxation and downtime for students, they also offer valuable chances for enrichment and exploration. Here are some ideas for your child during the break:
Read for Pleasure: Encourage your child to dive into books they enjoy. Whether it's fiction, non-fiction, or graphic novels, reading for pleasure can spark imagination, expand vocabulary, and foster a love of learning.
Explore Nature: Spend time outdoors exploring parks, nature trails, or simply your own backyard.
Get Creative: Encourage your child to unleash their creativity through art, music, writing, or any other form of expression they enjoy. Providing them with art supplies, musical instruments, or a journal can inspire them to explore their creative talents.
Learn Something New: Whether it's a new hobby, skill, or topic of interest, encourage your child to pursue learning outside of the classroom. This could involve trying out a new recipe, learning a musical instrument, or researching a topic they're curious about.
Stay Active: Engage in physical activities that promote health and wellness. Whether it's going for a bike ride, playing sports, or simply taking a family walk, staying active is essential for physical and mental well-being.
Volunteer or Give Back: Encourage your child to participate in acts of kindness and service to others. This could involve volunteering at a local charity, helping a neighbor, or participating in a community clean-up project.
Connect with Family and Friends: Use the break as an opportunity to strengthen relationships with family and friends. Plan activities together, have meaningful conversations, or simply spend quality time enjoying each other's company.
Have a great break!
Sincerely,
Adam Bullard
Did you check out the eclipse on Monday? We sure did! Student's and teachers alike couldn't wait to get outside at dismissal time to take a look.
The Outing Club 7th graders enjoyed an overnight at HVNC this past weekend and were able to take advantage of (what will hopefully be) the last of the snow! They hiked 1.5 miles out to the Pond Cabin for the night, cooked their own meals on camp stoves, made s'mores and stayed warm with the woodstove, played plenty of card games, and generally bonded through a shared experience. Thanks to the Mid Coast Parkview Health – Lincoln Health Community Health Improvement Fund Grant for funding the gear and cabin rentals, to Mr. Anderson, Ms. Madden, and Mr. Suttmeier who led the two overnight trips, and to all of the students who made the trips the successes that they were!
4th graders had their final swim lesson at the Wiscasset Rec on Monday. Students, as part of their Physical Education curriculum, have spent the last 4 weeks working hard while having a little fun improving their skills. GO LIONS!
Students from the Center for Alternative Learning (CAL) are spending Friday's this spring at the Darling Marine Center . They will be examining tidal pools along the coast in Walpole and adding sealife to the Center's many touch-tanks used for research. They will also be visiting local fisheries and Mook's Oyster Farm.
Kindergarten is learning about the different ways to measure things. This week their eighth grade buddies helped them explore length.

Enter the world of imagination and performance, in Heartwood Theater's 22nd youth summer camp at the Poe Theater on the LA Campus. Currently, there are 5 open spots for interested students entering 6th-12th grades, next fall. This camp will swing wide the doors of imagination, as students experiment with numerous forms of theater performance: acting, movement, improvisation, speech and poetry, music, masks, shadow puppetry and costumes. The end result will be a completely devised evening of presentation, based on classic texts. If your student is interested in this intensive three week experience (July 1 - 20), click here (or visit heartwoodtheater.org or email info@heartwoodtheater.org or phone 563-1373) for full details and forms.
