Dear NCS Families,
Remote Days/Final Student Day
Due to this unusual spring nor’easter, we have reached our 5 traditional snow day limit for the year. From here on out, if we were to experience another school cancellation, we would initiate our remote learning plans. You can read about those plans shared earlier in the year here. NOTE: The final student day will now be June 17th.
Eclipse Dismissal
Just a reminder that we will have a regular dismissal on Monday. That afternoon, I will remind students on the buses about behavior expectations and general safety since we anticipate many students being anxious and or excited on the ride home. All bus riders should be home at the time of the eclipse maximum.
Sincerely,
Adam Bullard
7th and 8th Grade students are currently working on researching the Civil War, picking a real Civil War soldier from Lincoln County to write about, and developing a story around this character's participation in the Civil War as part of both the Civil War unit in Social Studies and their narrative fiction unit in ELA.
Monday was "Camp Day," where students got to experience first-hand several aspects of Civil War camp life and journal about their experiences. First, some students set up a canvas-style tent while others gathered wood for our outdoor barrel wood stove. Students have been learning about the conditions faced by Civil War soldiers in camp, on the march, and in battle, and this was a chance to see how some of this may have felt for "their soldiers" (at least the camp and marching bits). They marched while following instructions in various formations both with and without backpacks, some of which were heavily laden. This was a "challenge by choice" where students choose their own load rather than mandating they carry the 30-50 pounds a Civil War soldier did.
After some drill practice and a longer march around the school and back again, students rested and enjoyed some hot tea and the Civil War marching day staple, hardtack. Students were then given time to do picket duty in the woods while others documented the day's experiences in their journals. At the end of the afternoon they "broke camp" and students headed home for the day.
NCS eighth graders took part in the Peter J. Benner Job Fair held at Lincoln Academy on Wednesday, meeting with a variety of area businesses regarding immediate openings and possible future career paths.
We are a little under a week away from this years spring play, Frozen. Students have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on wardrobes, scenery and perfecting their parts. The week to come will be full of rehearsals, including a full dress rehearsal for staff and students on Tuesday. On Wednesday the cast and crew will head to The Waldo Theatre for the day to do a few more run-throughs. Finally, Thursday night at 6pm, its SHOWTIME! Doors will open at 5:30, family and friends of students in the play are encouraged to arrive early to ensure seating. Break a leg Lions!!

Enter the world of imagination and performance, in Heartwood Theater's 22nd youth summer camp at the Poe Theater on the LA Campus. Currently, there are 5 open spots for interested students entering 6th-12th grades, next fall. This camp will swing wide the doors of imagination, as students experiment with numerous forms of theater performance: acting, movement, improvisation, speech and poetry, music, masks, shadow puppetry and costumes. The end result will be a completely devised evening of presentation, based on classic texts. If your student is interested in this intensive three week experience (July 1 - 20),click here (or visit heartwoodtheater.org or email info@heartwoodtheater.org or phone 563-1373) for full details and forms.
