Dear NCS Families,
As you are all probably aware, on April 8th our region will experience a solar eclipse.
Apr 8, 2024 at 3:31 pm
Max View in Town of Nobleboro, Maine
Global Event: | |
Local Type: | Partial Solar Eclipse in Town of Nobleboro, Maine |
Begins: | |
Maximum: | Mon, Apr 8, 2024 at 3:31 pm 0.971 Magnitude |
Ends: | Mon, Apr 8, 2024 at 4:40 pm |
Duration: | 2 hours, 21 minutes |
From the information above, you can see that our partial solar eclipse begins at 2:19 for Nobleboro. This is when the moon will first "touch" the disk of the sun. The maximum will be at 3:31pm with the final moment of the eclipse happening at 4:40pm.
Nobleboro is not in a "total solar eclipse" region. Therefore at no point should the eclipse be viewed without special viewing glasses. We have put in an order for these glasses for homeroom teachers to hand out to their students. These glasses basically work like welding glasses and you cannot see anything through them except the dim sun when looking directly at it. There are indirect ways of viewing the eclipse as well; pinhole projection being one. At maximum, it will feel like dawn or dusk.
Dismissal
We will have a regular dismissal on this day as no schools in the district are releasing early. That afternoon, I will remind students on the buses about behavior expectations and general safety since we anticipate many students being anxious and or excited on the ride home. All bus riders should be home at the time of the eclipse maximum.
Sports/Practice
Additionally, Michelle York - our Athletic Director - is making an afterschool practice plan to safely accommodate for the event.
Let’s hope for a clear day so we can fully experience this unique astronomical event!
Sincerely,
Adam Bullard
The Bikes for Books program wraps up next Monday (4/1) with all entries due then. Students in Grades 3-6 can enter to win one of 8 NEW bikes and helmets, courtesy of the local Masonic Lodge.
First-graders did some hands-on building during a STEAM project in the library last week. They heard the read-aloud “Those Darn Squirrels!” then went on to build their own squirrel-proof bird feeders and other contraptions. They used cardboard, wooden blocks, string, popsicle sticks, Lincoln Logs and more. Great job, first grade!
Third graders created paintings on canvas with Mrs. Stevens for the SMILES project. Paintings can be viewed in the NCS Library this week, and will be raffled off Friday, April 5. Staff and students are encouraged to stop by the Library for a SMILE, and to place their names in the bucket of the painting they hope to win.
Fridays are for Art Club!! 5-8 grade students are having a blast in the art room Friday afternoons from 2:30 - 4pm. Projects include drawing, origami, painting, knitting and more.
Have you heard about all the wonderful things our CAL kids have been up to this year?
After completing their time at The Apprenticeshop and Habitat for Humanity, students spent a couple of weeks exploring the three exhibition galleries at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Students spent their time learning about different styles of art while enjoying many hands on activities.
And maybe we have a few chefs in the making, as they have been whipping up some tasty meals in the FARMS Kitchen at the Y.
What's up next for this fantastic crew? The Darling Marine Center!!

Enter the world of imagination and performance, in Heartwood Theater's 22nd youth summer camp at the Poe Theater on the LA Campus. Currently, there are 5 open spots for interested students entering 6th-12th grades, next fall. This camp will swing wide the doors of imagination, as students experiment with numerous forms of theater performance: acting, movement, improvisation, speech and poetry, music, masks, shadow puppetry and costumes. The end result will be a completely devised evening of presentation, based on classic texts. If your student is interested in this intensive three week experience (July 1 - 20), click here (or visit heartwoodtheater.org or email info@heartwoodtheater.org or phone 563-1373) for full details and forms.
