Dear NCS Families,
The school board meeting last Monday was the perfect example of democracy in action. On the agenda for the board was a vote on whether Nobleboro would participate in an AOS93 district reorganization. The vote by the board was unanimously in favor of NOT moving toward a modified RSU structure - which could have resulted in our K-8 school becoming a PreK-4 building. Though most people would argue for the benefits of Pre-K, losing our 5th-8th grade students was not something anyone in attendance was willing to trade away.
It was by far the most well attended school board meeting I have ever been to. Several staff members, parents, and other community members spoke eloquently during public comment about the benefits of having middle level students in the same building as our youngest students. I wrote briefly about this in last week’s Roaring Times post about the Thanksgiving Feast. At this event, our 8th graders were instrumental in making sure the Feast went off without a hitch. Their leadership was expected and they delivered.
As we move deeper into budget season, I encourage families to attend future board meetings to hear more about what makes Nobleboro a special school and to get even more information about what sorts of support we will need to keep it that way.
Best,
Adam Bullard
Antonio Orantelli is an exchange student (at Erskine Academy) from Palermo Sicily and staying with a local family. His exchange "mom" works here at NCS so Mr. Parcher (CAL teacher) thought it would be terrific if Antonio came for a visit to speak with the Junior High School students. The QA session that followed was fantastic with very thoughtful questions from students and great responses from Antonio.
The first graders visited the old one-room schoolhouse located in front of NCS this Tuesday. Members of the Nobleboro Historical Society set up three stations for the students to try doing long- ago chores. They peeled apples, shucked corn, and did some laundry the old-fashioned way.
First through Fourth graders worked with primary colors creating group paintings; while fifth and Sixth graders made triarama sculptures in Art Class.
REMINDER: Tis the season to dress warmer. Please be sure to send your children in with proper winter apparel.
Kindergarten and Eighth graders are holding a food drive, collecting nonperishable items for both our 2 legged and 4 legged friends from December 1st-20th. Collection boxes are located throughout the school.
We are excited to announce that Lincoln County Dental is returning to NCS in the new year! Families interested who aren't established with a dentist, do not have dental insurance (or have Mainecare) are eligible to receive a free dental cleaning with evaluation. There are no X-rays during this visit, only an evaluation by a dental hygienist. Participating students will receive paperwork regarding their cleaning and any possible issues that were seen, along with any recommendations for follow-up.
Information packets will be sent home in the next couple weeks. So be on the lookout!
We hope everyone takes advantage of this great opportunity. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me at 563-3437 or by email at kodonnell@aos93.org.
