Good Bye Summer, Hello Fall

It's official, tomorrow marks the first day of Fall.  With that will come the changing of leaves, shorter days, and cooler temps.  Please remember to send your students with an extra layer for those brisk mornings or chilly afternoons.

Dear NCS Families,

Bus Discipline

I am hearing from our bus drivers that disruptive student behavior is on the rise this week.  Our bus drivers are crucial to the work we do here at NCS, so I ask that you help them and us by speaking with your child about appropriate bus behavior.  Highlighted below is the section in the Family Handbook that discusses these expectations.  Please review them with your child so that they are fully aware of the bus rules.  I will also be visiting classrooms to remind them over the next week.  Students that misbehave on the bus are likely to be given assigned seats behind the driver after a first offense, or may spend time in the office during recess/lunch as a consequence.

On the Bus

Students shall obey the driver who has full charge of the bus.

  • Students shall go to assigned seats without crowding/pushing and remain seated while the bus is in motion.

  • Students shall not fight or scuffle in the bus or create any disturbance.

  • Students shall not mar or deface the bus. Payment for damage to seats or other equipment will be the student’s responsibility.

  • Students are responsible for the cleanliness of the bus.

  • Students must not shout or wave to pedestrians or occupants of other vehicles, or throw objects out of or within the bus.

  • Students shall refrain from talking with the driver except in an emergency.

  • Students shall not sit on lunchboxes, backpacks or books, or place them in the aisle.

  • Students shall not open windows; the bus driver should do this.

  • Students should not eat food on the bus.

  • Prior to alighting from the bus, students shall remain seated until the bus stops.

  • If a student must cross a street after leaving the bus, (s)he should go to the front of the bus and wait until the bus driver directs him/her to cross.

Transportation Disciplinary Procedures

Distractions of the bus driver can contribute to accidents.  The school disciplinary policy will be implemented in the event that a problem occurs.  If the inappropriate behavior continues, students may lose their bus-riding privilege for extended periods of time.  Parents have the right to appeal a loss of riding privilege to the Superintendent of Schools.

Parent School Partnership Events

We hope that you found the Parent School Partnership Events worth attending.  We are excited to continue to adapt these evenings to make them more accessible to parents in the evenings as well as involve community partners to make them more educational.  Please reach out to me if you have any ideas or feedback for how to make these evenings more meaningful.

Best,

Adam Bullard
